How Heat Pumps Both Heat and Cool a Home

How does a heat pump pull off the miracle of working as both a heater and an air conditioner? It’s actually not miraculous, although it is somewhat ingenious. Basically, a heat pump takes the workings of an air conditioner and allows it to change the direction that it operates. You probably know that the outdoor unit of an air conditioner releases heat to the outside while it’s working. Now imagine you could make the air conditioner run backwards, so it was releasing heat into your home. That’s exactly what a heat pump does: with just a single adjustment on the thermostat, a heat pump reverses the direction refrigerant moves through it, causing the the indoor and outdoor coils to swap functions. That’s all it takes to go from great cooling to great heating—and back again.

Should You Schedule a Heat Pump Installation?

A heat pump isn’t the ideal system for every home, so when you are thinking about installing one, always call first on licensed and certified HVAC technicians. However, there are some very good reasons to consider a heat pump installation:

  • Heating and cooling in one place: If you’re ready to get rid of both the AC and a heater for your house, why not replace them both with a single system?
  • Energy savings in heating mode: Because heat pumps don’t burn fuel to create heat, instead using electrical power to move heat, they are much more energy efficient than many competing heating system.
  • Safety: Concerned about using gas power in your home? You don’t have to use gas for heating the household if you go with a heat pump. Heat pump cabinets don’t even get hot when they’re working!

We Also Offer Heat Pump Repair and Maintenance

A heat pump performs more work over a year than a standard air conditioner or furnace. That means a great deal more stress on the system, and unless you have your heat pump regularly maintained, you can expect to run into repair problems early. Our technicians are happy to help you with routine inspections and tune–ups to maintain your heat pump. And should you ever need repairs (you can’t prevent them all!) we’re ready to assist you 24/7.

You can trust to our NATE–certified technicians when it comes to any heat pump service you might need. Customer service is our number one priority at Collier's Heating & Air Conditioning, and we’ll see that you and your family have the comfort you deserve!
