How Solar PV Panels Work
Solar photovoltaic panels, also known as solar PV panels, are the basic units of any solar energy system. They change sunlight into electrical energy (this is the definition of the term photovoltaic). When light strikes the silicon photovoltaic cells inside the panels, it creates a field of moving electrons. At either end of the cell are metal conductive plates that collect the electrons, and from there transfer them into wires. A converter changes this direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC), which is then available to the house. At this point, the electricity is the same as the electricity that enters a home through the grid, and can be used for a wide variety of uses.
Are Solar Panels Useful in a Place Like Fort Wayne and Warsaw, IN?
Perhaps the most common question that people have about using solar PV panels for home energy is if they can provide sufficient power for their needs. Northeastern Indiana doesn’t have sunlight 365 days a year, and the winters contain long stretches of overcast weather. Does this cut into the usefulness of solar panels?
No, it doesn’t. Here’s something to consider: the country that makes the most use of solar energy is Germany, which has less sunlight per year than anywhere in the continental U.S. Solar panels don’t need harsh direct sunlight to work, they only need light, and there’s usually enough even on overcast days. Most solar energy systems come with a battery that stores power during periods of strong sunlight so it can be used later, and this helps make current solar PV panels more useful than ever before.
